Do the skies seem a little dull these days?
Is it harder to see clearly? The news hasn’t been particularly uplifting as of late. And here we are. What do we do now?
The list goes on and on—all the worthwhile ways we can contribute to a better tomorrow. We engage. We speak up. We put our values into practice. We carry the burden of change. We do all of this, and more.
Is that who we are?
Perhaps we are on a stage, pulling back the curtain of sunshine and kindness for the next act. But in the midst of all our doing, do we feel it ourselves?
What do you tell yourself as you stare at the ceiling in the darkness of night?
How will these bills get paid? What kind of life will my children—and their children—be able to live?
Are we the change-makers?
Yes and no.
As small and ineffective as it may sound, we can only truly change ourselves. But is that enough?
My wise and kind friends in spirit remind me: we knew what we were getting ourselves into.
Our hands shot high into the celestial skies when the call went out:
“Who wants to go back? It’s gonna be a bit rough.”
And we came.
We entered this material world with courage and purpose. We have not forgotten. We are showing up—in ways we may not even recognize, in ways we may never fully see.
Perhaps what is needed now is a pat on the back.
A little time on the bench. A drink of cold water. A moment to catch our breath while the game continues without us.
Because what we do for ourselves in the spirit of care, love, and compassion, we give to others. And when we care for ourselves, the world benefits.
Oh, I know. It can look so small. So quiet. So utterly ineffective.
But do you measure the strength of the wind by what it looks like?
You cannot see the wind, yet it bends trees, moves oceans, shapes dunes, and changes the landscape.
So it is with us.
All this passion. All this longing for the good.
We crave it as though we have been wandering through the desert, parched and desperate for water. And perhaps that longing itself is a kind of remembering.
What we long for, longs for us.
Goodness is not weakness. It is a force. A power. A living current moving beneath the surface—far greater than the slow disintegration of darkness.
We will the good into being, not through force or fear, but through intention. Through emotion. Through longing. Through vision.
Imagine it. Feel it. Nourish it.
Want the good—not casually, not timidly, but with everything we have.
We are each tending the small flame within us— and
Yes, it illuminates the skies.
